How many are we

Nuevo Leon has 4,199,292 inhabitants—4% of Mexico’s population. 2,108,619 are women and 2,090,673 are men. We are quite young, because 62% of the population is between 15 and 59 years old.

We currently have a growth rate of 1.4% and we expect to have 4,552,404 inhabitants by 2010.

Where do we live

94% of the state's population lives in urban areas with more than 2,500 inhabitants.

88% (3.7 million) live in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, which is formed by nine cities: Monterrey, San Pedro Garza García, Santa Catarina, Guadalupe, San Nicolás de los Garza, Apodaca, General Escobedo and Juárez. Linares and Montemorelos are other main cities in the state.

There are 994,983 houses, of which 90.2% has potable water, 95.1% has drainage and 98.1% has electricity.

Health

71% of the population has Social Security—ISSSTE or another public insurance. 29% are not beneficiaries and are cared for by the State Department of Health.

The main causes of death are heart disease, cancer and diabetes, as in the rest of the country. Heart disease, cancer and strokes are slightly more common in Nuevo León than in the rest of the country, whereas diabetes, liver disease and problems in the perinatal period are less common.
